What Is Ventolin: Ventolin HFA, Ventolin Inhaler, Spray, Syrup
Ventolin is used to alleviate breathing difficulties in patients suffering from respiratory disorders. The active ingredient of Ventolin is albuterol which is a short-acting selective beta2-adrenergic receptor agonist (SABA). It is a prescription drug recommended for patients experiencing bronchospasm or constriction of airways which may occur in respiratory diseases such as asthma and emphysema. Bronchospasm manifests itself with wheezing and shortness of breath. Ventolin dilates the airways and eases breathing by relaxing the muscles around the respiratory passages. This drug can be used both after the onset of symptoms and in advance when the patient expects to experience bronchospasm, such as prior to exercise and inevitable contact with an allergen. It prevents the occurrence of symptoms, significantly improving the quality of life of people with respiratory diseases.
GlaxoSmithKline manufactures brand-name Ventolin in the form of tablets, syrup for oral administration, and inhalers. The inhaler is particularly beneficial in the case of exercise-induced bronchospasm as it provides rapid relief, usually in less than 5 minutes. When using an inhaler is not possible, the patient can instead opt for the tablet and syrup forms. Generic versions of albuterol are also available for purchase. Chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) albuterol inhalers were commonly used in the past, but now only HFA inhalers are available as the propellant hydrofluoroalkane (HFA) is more environmentally friendly than chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). Ventolin HFA inhaler has a metered-dose canister containing nearly 200 actuations with each actuation delivering 100 mcg of albuterol. 2 sprays are typically recommended 15 to 30 minutes in advance when expecting to perform any physical activity/exercise to prevent bronchospasm. If the symptoms of asthma have already occurred, 2 sprays every 4 to 6 hours are usually sufficient to alleviate bronchospasm.
Ventolin is safe for use in adults and children older than 4 years but its safety in younger children is yet to be determined. It is a Pregnancy Category C drug – suitable for use when benefits outweigh the risk – so a physician should always be consulted for a risk assessment if Ventolin is to be used during pregnancy.
Ventolin Side Effects
Some common side effects associated with Ventolin usage that do not require medical attention unless persistent or severe are:
These side effects subside as the body adjusts to Ventolin.
Some rare but serious side effects of Ventolin are:
- Chest pain
- Leg cramps
- Heart palpitations
- High blood pressure
In some patients Ventolin can worsen the symptoms; if breathing is negatively affected or wheezing occurs after Ventolin use, drug administration should be ceased and immediate medical attention should be sought.
Before Ventolin administration, it is important to rule out allergy to albuterol. Allergic reactions to Ventolin are uncommon but can nevertheless occur. Allergic reactions manifest themselves with such symptoms as skin rashes, vertigo, difficulty breathing/swallowing, and swelling of the tongue, face, or throat. If any of these symptoms appear after Ventolin administration, a doctor should be consulted immediately.
I was prescribed Ventolin as a maintenance drug for COPD. It has been 3 weeks since I started taking it and I have noticed a gradual improvement in my symptoms. I initially experienced some pain in my bones and Charley Horse cramps which were quite bad, to be honest, but I got better with time. The best part is that I can finally breathe normally now.

During the last 4 years, I have been taking Ventolin HFA for the maintenance of COPD and I am very happy with how it has worked for me. It only takes 3-5 minutes for my symptoms to improve. My only issue with Ventolin is that I don’t think I get 200 puffs with my inhaler. It works well during the first 150 puffs or so, but it seems to be empty afterward so I don’t think I always get the correct dosage.
